The 20 best women's raincoats to keep you dry all year round

The only thing consistent about the Great British weather is its unpredictability – with unwelcome rain a frequent feature in the forecast. Here’s our roundup of the best women’s waterproof jackets and raincoats, so you can keep warm and dry even when the heavens open.

By Lucy Cotterill | Last updated Dec 18, 2023

There’s no denying that good old Blighty has its fair share of active rain clouds, but the silver lining is that it’s the perfect excuse to splash out on new wet weather attire.

Let’s face it. Umbrellas are more trouble than they’re worth in blustery conditions and aren’t exactly manageable when you’re in charge of a pushchair or several kids. Along with a great pair of wellies, a protective raincoat can be the answer to your wet weather worries – and whilst they’re often thought of as frumpy, our selection proves that there’s no need to sacrifice style for practicality - we think they look chic with leggings and jeggings.

We’ve gone on the hunt for the best shower-worthy jackets and coats with the help of numerous consumer reviews and countless recommendations from unbiased Mumsnet users, who’ve tested out all styles and brands of raincoats while enduring the school run, walking the dog or getting the kids' wellies on and embracing the rain and muddy puddles.

From full-length to packable, here are the best women’s raincoats for 2022 that’ll stop you from getting soaked.

“I have a knee length hooded Seasalt one in a sort of raspberry colour and it's fantastic. Totally waterproof and a fairly warm lining.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user beguilingeyes)

Our verdict

A true Mumsnet favourite, our forums ring with endorsements for Seasalt’s bestselling waterproof raincoat. The Janelle is a great all-rounder, offering excellent cover, even in the most torrential of conditions.

A longer-length raincoat with fleece lining, it offers substantial warmth – perhaps a little too much if you need only a light layer for autumn and spring showers. We really rate the  fully-taped seams and a detachable hood with a peak to keep those raindrops away from your face.

With reflective strips for added safety, it makes the ideal coat for school runs and dog walks when it’s starting to get dark. Of course, all these features come at a price – and a fairly hefty one at that.

Our verdict

One of the biggest concerns expressed by Mumsnet users seeking a new raincoat was how to avoid that ‘plasticy’ feel that is oh-so-common with waterproof coats. Thankfully, the Fat Face Taylor Jacket is soft to the touch despite its taped seams and waterproof fabric.

With a generous hood, bungee cord adjuster and plenty of sealed pockets, this longer length raincoat will even keep your bum dry if you need to sit down on your travels.

With a relaxed zip and popper fastening, it’s an ideal coat for throwing on over your clothes when the heavens open. As much as we love the khaki, we just wish it came in a wider choice of colours.

How to choose the best raincoat

With so many raincoats to choose from, it can be hard to find the make a decision on the right one for you. Here are some things to consider when making your choice:

  • Style - What style raincoat would you like? Do you prefer a fitted, feminine style with nipped in waist or hem, or do you prefer a more relaxed, boxed style of coat?

  • Warmth - Some waterproof raincoats are thin, lightweight shells and as such, designed to be worn with layers underneath. If you’re looking for a coat that is warm as well as waterproof, a parka or thicker style raincoat may be preferable to a thin packaway design.

  • Length - Raincoats vary in length - some tend to stop at the hip, whilst other raincoats offer complete coverage of your bum. Think about when and where you’ll be wearing yours.

  • Hood - To protect against the rain, a good quality hood is a must. You may want to consider whether the hood is detachable (making it a great choice all year round) or whether it has any special features such as a fur trip or peaked hem to keep those raindrops away from your face.

  • Waterproof fabrics -  Is it water repellent or water proof? Look out for the waterproof ratings. Whilst a lower waterproof rating will be perfectly adequate for school runs and dog walks, you might need something more substantial for hikes and treks in unpredictable conditions.

  • Breathable fabrics - Not all raincoats are fully breathable - so coats with good ventilation are helpful if you’re planing on being particuatly active.

  • Colour - Some raincoats are limited to muted, traditional shades, others come in a wider range of bright shades too, which can add some colour into otherwise dull days.

What's the best women’s raincoat?

The best women’s raincoat is the Helly Hansen W Kirkwall II Raincoat. With a timeless design and available in a range of classy colours, there’s no reason why this waterproof jacket shouldn’t be your go-to wet-weather garment for the foreseeable. Both modern and feminine, it also provides a great fit.

While it may not be warm enough for mid-winter and is fairly pricey, it’s perfect for spring, summer and autumn downpours and should be thought of as a long-term investment – particularly as it comes with its very own PU repair kit.

How we chose our recommendations

We first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which women’s raincoats discerning Mumsnetters recommended and had bought themselves, noting their feedback about these brands. We then drew up a shortlist of those that were repeatedly mentioned.

From there, we did some research across the wider web, consulting independent review sites and taking into account what customer reviews said about the garments featured. Having collated all that information, we picked the waterproof jackets and raincoats we thought were worthy of featuring in our selection.
