Looking at some of these 'fairy doors' - they're not even good! I've seen beautiful ones hidden away before, and actually quite liked them, but this is just leaving your kids toys in the woods, surely?

Or am I a mean old lady? Grin

YANBU. At all. If animals could swallow parts of them, then quite right they’re removed.

I agree.

Oh god no, how tacky.

Isn't seeing a woodpecker or something 'magical' without peddling make-believe shite? Grin

I'm a miserable old cow, and I think they look fecking hideous...! I can get the idea but think it'd all be far nicer in natural materials, rather than making it look like gnome heaven...

I hate all this bollocks. Us humans are so arrogant, thinking we can improve upon the natural world.

Glad I'm not the only miserable one!

Perhaps the council could have given notice or something, but if you leave your stuff in the woods you can hardly expect to also claim any rights over it!

Oh I think its rather sweet. My daughter loves to make fairy gardens, I bet she would enjoy hunting for fairy doors in the woods. Im all for a bit of whimsy.

Nowt 'whimsy' about wildlife choking to death on the spindly little parts.

Maybe there’s a MrBadger character fighting crime and whimsey!! Saving small animals and dismantling and selling the trinkets to foxes.

Disclaimer have dgs aged 3 tomorrow and a woodland walk and story planned Wink

Yanbu. If you want a bit of plastic magic for your children, save it for your garden. Or better yet, teach them about the real magic of real nature.

(Same for people leaving plastic and non-degradeable shite in traditional cloutie trees and those bastard empty tea light holders bastard everywhere 😔)

Can't say it better than MrsTerryPratchett

Where I live has lots of tree lined roads many of which have 'fairy doors' installed. They are made of nicely painted wood and they make a fun feature in the city (plus they are looked after by the owners of the nearby houses). The ones in the photos in that article look mainly like plastic tat so I can see why the council cleared them away, especially if they were concerned that it had become a bit of a thing although I also see the point of the person in the article if it's true that she has voluntarily litter picked around the trees and the council have left other rubbish in the area.

I live near various “ancient sites” and derps have taken to tying ribbons and bits of cloth in trees all around. Looks like thousands of tiny bits of rubbish have been caught in the branches. It’s a fairly recent phenomenon. Didn’t used to happen 🤷🏼‍♀️

And don't get me started on balloon releases.

There's a bit of balloon that's been clinging to a beautiful tree outside my Dad's house for eight years now.

And, and I may be less popular here, rock stacking. Especially on archaeological sites where there are signs telling you not to stack rocks!

Humans are so ANNOYING.

Jesus, who would think to leave that shite in a piece of woodland?
They’re for your own garden, surely? People are weird...

YANBU. Fucking ridiculous. Make one of all natural materials if you must. Or better yet, make a fairy garden for your own home instead of nature's.

When I was small, I had a whole fairy village in my head. I would find the tiny, natural cracks and crevices in the trees and imagine them into doorways and homes. They were the secret, private, hidden places where my fairies lived.

To have stumbled across some whacking great, ugly, clearly made by a adult human, door in the woods would have ruined it all for me. They look and feel so intrusive. It is not enough for children to imagine these things, but adults have to try and usurp them for themselves.

Yes - the 'fairy' craze hadn't begun when my DD was little, but we could look for Badger's door and bootscraper (and mini beasts, birds etc too of course).

I have never seen any fairy doors or such things,,but they look quite wrong in lovely woodlands, and hopefully the fad will die out soon. I was wondering if it all starts with things seen on social media, and then the so inclined all follow suit,, a bit like this rock stacking craze.

I think they are really cute, and just a bit of fun. There are some miserable articles on this thread! And in real life too, if people are complaining! Bet the are the ones who hate Christmas, making sandcastles, going to the swings and slides when you're an adult, and all things that are 'fun' coz they're grumpy fuckers.

As for animals choking on the bits... what utter rot. As if they're dumb enough to eat the bits.

It's never happened. And it never will.
