Miele WMH120WPS Washing Machine Review Thread NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 26/01/2015 12:32

This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who are currently testing out the Miele WMH120WPS washing machine.

Here's what Miele say, "With Miele’s exclusive Quick PowerWash, you benefit from a full A-rated wash in under an hour, getting the laundry done in record time. Better still, this large-capacity machine manages this whilst boasting an A+++ energy rating and being quieter than other models in this range.
The clever TwinDos system, automatically dispenses either Miele detergents or your preferred brand of liquid detergent and fabric conditioner for up to three months between refills. The WMH 120 WPS determines the best moment to release these during the cycle, meaning that each wash is tailored to that particular load, for the best results each time."

Testers: We'll be asking you to add feedback twice - we'd like your first impressions now and we will add some more questions after you've had a little bit of time to test out your washing machine.

So, for your first impressions, Miele would love to know:

  • What were your impressions from the first few uses?
  • So far, what do you think of: the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

Please note: your anonymous comments may be used by Miele on their website and other marketing materials.

Thanks,

- What were your impressions from the first few uses?

First impressions are that this machine is fantastic and easily the best washer I have ever used. I love how nice and modern it looks, the fact that you can totally adjust the settings for whatever type of laundry, how dirty it is, and also what type of stains you have.

I chose a coloured wash with make up stain selected and it got rid of stubborn foundation from collars and some muslin cloths that are used for cleansing, even with a medium level of dirt selected. I thought I might have had to choose white wash rather than coloureds (which would have used more level 2 detergent) but the stains were all removed. I know for a fact that this type of stain was never removed properly with my previous washer.

I also love the fact that when the wash has finished, the machine softly tumbles the laundry until you open the door, which reduces creases, For a non-ironer such as myself this is a great feature.

I think the 20 minute quick wash is great. I thought the 35 minute wash on my last machine was good, but 20 minutes for very lightly soiled things is time saving and more eco friendly and money saving too, I used this cycle for some tshirts and cardigans and they came out perfectly washed.

- So far, what do you think of: the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

I have used the washing machine about 8 times since it was installed, and have tried different programmes and combinations of soiling, water temp etc.

Wash results are brilliant, the sound is much much quieter than any previous machine I have owned.

Ease of use, you DO need to read the manual first, but once you have worked out the different deeper settings you can go into, its then very easy.

If you want to keep things simple you can also do that, with the pre set settings, but I personally like to change settings, like reduce temperature etc if things are not particularly dirty.

So, to summarise, I would definitely have to say that this washing machine is in a different league to every machine I have owned in nearly 30 years. It's seriously good. I don't think I can find a fault with it!

- What were your impressions from the first few uses?
It looks great, the door is like a giant whitewall tyre! I've never needed to read the manual for a washing machine before, but you really do need to with this one. I tried to put an initial load on using my common sense to see how intuitive the interface is, and ended up running a wash with no detergent. I had assumed it would default to use the twindos, rather than having to be instructed to use it.

My last machine was pretty basic, and I just used the 60 degree wash for bedding and shirts and the 40 degree non fast coloureds wash for everything else, so the wide choice of programs is confusing me a bit. I think the automatic program is probably the one I'll use most, and I'm a bit surprised that it's in the additional programs menu rather than being available on the dial.

I washed DHs shirts on the shirt setting, he reports that they were clean and easy to iron. He gets a rash from a lot of washing powder, so has kindly consented to act as an animal test subject for the twin dos detergent, will report back on how he does!

I used the wool cap to clean some hand knitted baby clothes, and they came out smelling lovely, soft and clean.

- So far, what do you think of: the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

We're in the throws of weaning here, so what I've mainly washed are absolutely filthy muslins and bibs, and so far it has removed every scrap of pureed spinach, regurgitated sweet potato etc.

Sound levels are ace. the people we bought our house off inexplicably removed every downstairs door, so we really suffer if appliances are noisy. DH didn't even realise it was on last night.

Ease of use - well, as mentioned above, I didn't find it particularly intuitive. I don't keep the manual next to any of my other appliances, although to be fair, I'm trying to use it as per the instructions so that I'm testing properly. I love not having to put powder in. Does that make me lazy?

PS, also meant to say that the service from the delivery men was fab, although the communication leading up to the delivery wasn't great and led to me keeping a friend waiting in soft play for 1.5 hours. she'll probably start an AIBU about me!

First impressions

It looks space age! I was really impressed with how well it washed and spun the clothes. Downside was I ended up doing a few loads twice because I kept forgetting to press the twin dos button!! I like the poster above sort of thought it would have done it automatic as in if if wasn't in the drawer it would take it from the bottom. Also because of the box on the back that's a cut out safety thing that shuts off to stop you having a flood it has caused problems as machine can't be pushed under worktop properly but I've spoken to them today and they are sending me an extension to help sort this out

So far, what do you think of: the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

I really like the power wash and quick wash and I'm really impressed with the wash results the clothes are definitely cleaner and it spins tighter even though my old machine was a 1600 spin speed I just wish that the temp option was available on more of the pre set programmes eg I might not want a 40 wash but I can't put it to 30 which isn't allowed on some programmes I have found I don't use the dial to select programme washes as I prefer to tweak them for stains etc. I was disappointed at the denim dark wash not allowing it to spin at 1600 and a few of the other wash programmes won't allow you to put temp down to 30. So it's harder to teach my girls 20 and 21 to use it easily (although that's probably an excuse) instead of selecting eg quick wash 30 I find I'm trying to get it through the programme manager option. Yes you do need to read the instructions I normally wouldn't but I found even playing/searching through options wasn't enough I'm now on wash load 13 now in 6 days I've just put a stained tablecloth (grease marked) in and waiting to see results. I've used all the stain options etc to try see will it clean it fingers crossed. I absolutely love the anti crease function at the end of the cycle and stuff isn't as creased as it normally is when you remove washing. As for the noise level I'm in heaven I now longer have a 747 taking off in my kitchen when it's time for spin cycle It's so quiet I actually have set the beep higher to let me know when it's finished I feel I need that beep to tell me that it's finished as honestly it's so quiet when it spins

What were your impressions from the first few uses?

I adore this machine! It looks very smart. You definitely need to read through the manual to get an idea of the settings etc before you use it. I sat waiting impatiently for the initial empty wash to finish before I could start playing with it, I stripped all of the beds and had my washing baskets emptied by the end of the day!

There were some issues when it arrived because of the cold fill hose (was too short and wouldn't have connected anyway because of the box as there was another pipe in the way) but an engineer arrived the next day with an extension to plumb it in. Miele should consider giving the delivery guys a stock of hose extenders so they can fit the machines without delays, they said they can't cut holes into cupboards etc to accommodate the box on the pipe so it would avoid this being a fitting problem too.

So far, what do you think of: the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

Wash results are brilliant, a normal 40 wash got black felt tip pen out of my 4y old dd's baby blue school cardie. I've used alot of the settings and have to say I'm very impressed, all of the different washes I've used have cleaned the clothes brilliantly, they come out smelling nice even if I haven't used fabric softener (using the supplied detergents with the dos). They are more dry and a lot less creased than they were using my old machine.

The spin is brilliant, my old machine was a 1400 and the 1200 on this machine is far far better.

Sound levels, what sound? This machine is seriously quiet, Unless I'm in the kitchen I can't hear it at all. The full spin sounds like a hum and when washing all you can hear is the quiet sloshing of the clothes moving around, it's a little spooky not being able to hear the motor running or the drum turning. My next door neighbour said it's been strange not hearing my machine on spin in the evenings. So quiet even the neighbour noticed! In the manual it mentions an extra quiet option incase you have a sleeping baby etc, honestly this setting is not needed, if this machine on spin wakes your sleeping baby then your baby has super human hearing!

After I read the manual I found this machine pretty easy to use. My old machine was a simple dial and button operated so was very nervous about getting used to this machine but it's been fine. There are still a lot of options/programme tweaks that I need to try, I'll try my best to give as many as I can a go.

What were your impressions from the first few uses?

I was impressed. The delivery guy gave me an excellent demonstration which meant I was confident to stick on the first few washes without referring to the manual. It looks great and I had no issues with the box at the back as my washing machine is in essentially a big cupboard! I have been using the twindos and the clothes are coming out clean and fresh smelling.

I have used the whites/denim/express and cotton washes with variable light to dark soiling and the washing machine has performed brilliantly on all. I now need to read the manual and try out some of the more complicated programmes. I am looking forward to trying out the Sport tab too on all of DH's gym kit and towels as the load always still smelled of slightly stale ingrained sweat after washing in my old one.

So far what do you think of the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

Well it's certainly cleaning better than my old washing machine, no issues at all but I'm yet to try all programmes. It is really quiet, in fact it's too quiet - many a wash load have sat damp and neglected for a few hours before I remember putting it on and chucking it into the tumble dryer! My old one made such a fuss and performance of the spin cycle that the whole house vibrated.

The delivery guy made it easy for me in terms of using the machine to wash on standard programmes, the manual seems straight forward enough and I've managed to figure out a few things myself so in my opinion it is quite intuitive and the ease of use is great so far.

I'm really enjoying using my "posh wash" !

Just wanted to add that it's one week and four hours since machine was installed and it asking for a maintenance wash Confused I thought it would have been about once a month. I have just put the maintenance cycle on and where normally you have display saying time remaining etc it's completely blank. I will report tomorrow if the display comes back to normal as I yet again have washing to do

  • What were your impressions from the first few uses?

The washing machine so far seems great. It's a slightly smaller drum than my old bosch machine so I was worried about that but it seems to fit everything I need in. It looks really modern and expensive and is something I would have liked if I had seen it on display. The Miele brand is associated with quality and I was worried that it wouldn't live up to expectations but so far, so good. It seems that this is a brand which deserves its reputation. However, looks aside, the wash quality and energy efficiency are extremely important to me and I'm happy to report that so far, this washing machine comes up trumps on both. Very good first impressions here.

  • So far, what do you think of: the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

It's so quiet! I love it. I've hardly noticed it's on. I'm really happy with the wash results too. My washing is clean and smells lovely. DS has just moved up a size in nappies and we had one day where he needed changing four times! He's also a dribble monster and is partial to being sick on my DH's shoulder. The washing machine has coped incredibly well with this, everything smells fresh, is beautifully clean and the condition of the clothes remains perfect. Clothes also seem to come out drier and need less tumble drying which is great for my bills. They also seem to need less ironing which is even better.

Once you know how, this machine is easy to use. Although initially it seemed more complicated, it's actually very self explanatory. The displays are clear and I like having personalised washes for different degree of soiling or for colour/white washes. I prefer using the dos option and am happy to continue using the Miele detergent because I like the smell.

I want to add something here that has surprised me.
There was an old tshirt (used for bed) here that had a slight musty smell as if it had got damp at some point, and this smell remained even though its been washed loads of times in my old Hotpoint, with bio washing powder, on different temperatures and wash cycles.
I washed it yesterday in a 30 degree coloured wash using the 'sport' tab, and the tshirt is now dry and the smell has gone!

Am loving this washing machine. It's on now, and I can't even hear it.

What were you first impressions from the first few uses?

Firstly the guys who installed it were great, had a joke or to with them, and they it fitted in fine, minor issue with our garden gate but that the gates problem not the machine. No problem with box on the back for us as my washing machine lives in a cupboard which has space around it. It looks great and it does seem a little sad shutting it away. Done few washes, all using a variation on the auto wash as that seems to match the loads I had to do which was coloured mixed fabric clothes. I've been using the allegro (sp?) setting which is the allergy setting, which the manual says increases rinsing which I'm hoping is the equilalent on my old machine. I've worked out how to do extra rinse but it's not possible on the auto wash setting. It was a little confusing the first couple of times I've used it and had to consult the manual. I've been using the duos degerent but will try the tab over the weekend on DDs crosscountry kit after her race on Saturday. It's very quiet, which will be great when the washing machine is on when the tumble drier isn't!

What do you of the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

Covered some of this above, but what I do like is that you can stop it when you've messed up the proots me at the start, forgot to tell it to use duos first time and the extra rinsing the second! I can see this will be really handy when I spot an extra sock or t-towel after putting the wah on.

To conclude so far I'm really impressed if still a little daunted by the capabilities of the machine. I'm going to try some more of the programmes over the weekend. I'd like to put our bedsheets through a hot wah with extra stain as there tea spills which my old machine failed to get out even with vanish. I also want to try washing DDs sleeping bag which I'm guessing the down filled items will do well. Shall try it and report back, oh the other thing I'm keen to try is the delayed start, we have solar panels so ideally like to run my machine during the daylight and in the winter midday is best but as I'm a work it wasn't possible, but hopefully will now work.

What were your impressions from the first few uses?

Initial thoughts were that this shiny, very high tech looking machine looked totally out of place in my scruffy utility room! I was also surprised at how heavy it was (delivery men couldn't fit it due to non return valve box thingy and left it blocking the back door so had to try and move it!) Dh said the weight was a sign of the high quality of the machine. I had a good read of the instruction manual whilst waiting for DH to come home and carve up the cupboard to fit the box through.

Dh's comments after fitting was that it was a much better quality than our old machine and that this was evident from things such as a brass lock ring on the end of the tube instead of a plastic one as well as a designated storage space on the back of the machine for the transport bars "It's just been so well thought about" he said. I loved the fact that the door is completely flat and not inset at all. It has always been a bugbear of mine that dust settles on the ledge in the door but that is not going to happen with this machine.

This machine is the first one I've had where I've really had to study the instruction booklet. My first thoughts were that I was never going to get to grips with it but actually once you have mastered the basics it is quite intuitive.

Like other testers I was surprised that you have to actually select either the twin dos or cap system and that it doesn't do it automatically. On the second wash I forgot to select one and had to rewash it. It would be good if you were forced to select an option for the machine to start.

Overall first impressions were very, very good.

  • So far, what do you think of: the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

This machine is fantastic and gets things really clean (or maybe it's the Miele detergents?) Either way I'm impressed. I wasn't sure whether I would like the Miele detergent as I am fussy about my detergents and normally an Ariel powder gal however I have to say that the clothes come out smelling lovely even after tumble drying and with no fabric conditioner. I need to do a cost comparison but I think I may stock up on the Miele detergent.

I have used the woollen detergent cap and also used the sports programme and detergent for DH's smelly cycling gear. They came out really clean and smelling lovely. It sounds lazy but the fact that you don't have to put detergent in every wash is great. I have also discovered that our water is much softer than I thought as the machine kept telling me that too much foam had been detected and I needed to reduce the dose. It makes me realise that I must have used way too much detergent in the past and I love that the machine is helping me to save money as well as minimising my impact on the environment.

Other features that I love are the ability to select the degree of soiling as well as the main minimum iron programme and the anti-crease tumble when the cycle has finished.

The machine is very quiet when in use however we find it much louder when it is filling with water as we can hear it when we are upstairs which we couldn't with our old machine (I think it must be something to do with the valve/box thing)

Once you have got the hang of it, it is very easy to operate. My only niggle is that the cottons programme (which is the one I use most) has its default temperature as 60c. I am a little nervous that one day I will forget to change it down to 40c and will shrink my clothes.

When I was getting used to the machine I thought that the chance of Dh using the machine and actually putting a wash on had become even more of a remote possibility as it takes a bit of getting used to. However DH views it as a new technological gadget and is keen to use it so that has been an unexpected bonus!

Thank you so much for picking me to be in this trial, I would never have dreamt of spending that much on a washing machine but it's immediately clear it is a cut above!

- What were your impressions from the first few uses?

First impression before I'd even used it was of overwhelming quality. It looks like a glistening space age entity in my utility room! The way everything fits together has a lovely reassuring solidity - for example closing the door or putting in the dos cartridges.

You definitely need to read the instructions to get the best of it. I was able to do a couple of washes without based on the overview from the delivery team but didn't really grasp the degree of customisation available.

I particularly like the 20 min quick wash as it does a good refresh of clothes which are just starting to fade. Oh and being able to change the soiling level has been amazing on my sons grubby clothes - they have literally never been so clean!

I'm surprised how much I like the twindos system as I wasn't convinced it would add much (as opposed to just popping my existing dosing cup in the machine) but I really do, it's very convenient and there's no little dribbles of detergent on the counter, rooting around to try and find a cup etc. I have managed to forget to turn it on a few times and had to rewash - would like it to default to on.

- So far, what do you think of: the wash results, sound levels and ease of use?

Wash results are great, everything has come out very soft, nice smelling and well spun. Interesting how much drier the clothes are in this machine than in my old one with the same spin speed.

It is incredibly quiet, have had to check a few times I'd actually put it on!

It's not a totally intuitive machine to use but once you've had a good read of the instructions it follows a logical process.

I own this machine, bought it in November just gone.

The wash results are good, however for a standard 40 wash thats not a quick wash, it takes 3 hours long!!

If you put stain remover in and select the stain function then it takes 3 hours and 40 mins!

My washing machine is very noisy on the spin. Miele have been out to it to see what the problem was and its because i live in a new build house and the flooring is chip board. The only way this machine will be very quiet on the spin is if its positioned on concrete flooring.

Even my ds's stinky baby vests have come out perfect on a short (1hr) 30 degree wash. I've been really impressed.
