AIBU?

To say that people who put their tomato sauce/ketchup in the fridge are plain wrong.

They just are.

There is no need.

Similarly, the deluded people who put eggs in the fridge are wrong.

Eggs are best left at room temperature.

Fact.

And don't get me started on butter...

People really put ketchup in the fridge? Just…… WHY?

Report
HedgehogsDontBite · 01/03/2015 00:20

I put ketchup in the fridge. Along with jam, pickles, chutney etc. Why? Because the fridge is massive and my milk get lonely all by itself. (IE just making use of available space)

Because some of the additives have been removed. There used to be no need to keep it in the fridge but now there is.

Ours is in the fridge. I don't use it. It belongs to dh and he insists on the fridge but think it says keep refridgerated after opening on it. Eggs are not in fridge. Jam and marmalade are (again they say keep refridgerated after opening).

YABU. Read the labels.

It says so on the bottle but I am sure I have seen an episode of QI where they said it wasn't necessary due to the amount of vinegar. In ever have adi don't want it to cool my bacon.

There is nothing, NOTHING, better than a hot chip dipped in coooooool red sauce. Fact.

Tomatoe sauce label States that it should be kept in the fridge. I find texture is more watery if not refrigerated after opening.

Labels schmabels.

Lot of nonsense IMO.

Keeping ketchup in the fridge = working class. Not making a judgement, working class is a neutral term relating to one's position in society as a social construction etc etc but, where one stores their ketchup is (said to be, by some) an indication of being working class.

I should add that my DF used to lick the rim of the ketchup bottle to remove the crusty residue so there's no 'breeding' here.

There are two types of people in the world.

Those who read labels on ketchup bottles and abide vigilantly by the advice given on said label and those people who put the ketchup in the cupboard and suffer no harm as a result.

What the fuck are you talking about?

Why do we need labels to tell us if something is "off".

Have our senses devolved to the point where we have no common sense?

Do we have to be told how to do everything now?

That was to mooth. I don't consider ketchup to be a class issue.

Why does it say on the bottle to refrigerate if you don't need to?

Do you shove your milk in the cupboard too?

My sister practically disowned my mum for giving her DD a yogurt which was 1 day out of date. If it's not evolved to the point where it's asking to be let out of the tub, my kids can have it.

This is bizarre. For the first time in my life I checked the ketchup bottle this evening to see if it was meant to be in the fridge and I thought to myself, I bet there's a MN thread about this.

Really odd.

Oh and it lives in my cupboard. I had no idea, until this evening, that it was meant to be in the fridge.

"Because some of the additives have been removed. There used to be no need to keep it in the fridge but now there is."

This

"Keeping ketchup in the fridge = working class."

Bollocks. Is showing off that you can read working class?

"There are two types of people in the world."

Yes, smug people who think that advice labels on food items are for thick people and those with sensitive stomachs who prefer to follow food storage advice on bottle labels.

After a nasty bout of salmonella several years ago I prefer to reduce the risk of food spoilage, and subsequent bouts of food poisoning, and keep bottles and jars in the fridge if advised to do so. I have a south facing warm and sunny kitchen BTW.

YABU to have given any thought whatsoever to where other people keep their ketchup.

I keep mine in the shed. Just to be different. It's cooler than the cupboard, but not as cold as the fridge, so I'm on the fence re. temperature. The marmalade is in the greenhouse. It's very warm in the summer. Branston Pickle is in the bin, because it's disgusting.

Agree salmo about all that labels crap. I'm getting all cross thinking about it. Like my MIL put a load of dd's clothes on a 90 degree wash cause the washing machine had a "baby and toddler" setting so she thought she'd better use it.
Sorry, tangent.
But honestly. Who's not got the common sense to think something made of vinegar doesn't need to go in the fridge?

Report
squoosh · 01/03/2015 00:37

I keep my mayonnaise in the cupboard too!

WD41 - so you need a label to help you organise yourself?

What a shame.
